AP World History Short-Answer Question on India vs. England

👋 Welcome to the AP World Unit 6 SAQ (India vs. England). These are shorter questions, but you'll still want to grab some paper and a pencil, or open up a blank page on your computer.

⚠️ (Unfortunately, we don't have an Answers Guide for this question, but it can give you an idea of how an SAQ for Unit 6 might look on the exam.)

⏱ The AP World exam has a mixture of free-response questions and allotted times. For these types of questions, there will be 3 SAQs, and you will be given 40 minutes to complete the SAQ section. (This means you should give yourself ~13 minutes to go through each practice SAQ.)

Text

Source*: Jawaharlal Nehru, The Discovery of India, The John Day Company, 1946 (adapted)*

"This process continued throughout the nineteenth century. Other old Indian industries – shipbuilding, metalwork, glass, paper – and many crafts were broken up. Thus the economic development of India was stopped and the growth of new industry prevented… A typical colonial economy was built up. India became an agricultural colony of industrial England. It supplied raw material and provided markets for England’s industrial goods. The destruction of industry led to unemployment on a vast scale… The poverty of the country grew. The standard of living fell to terribly low levels. "

Questions

(a) Describe one instance of “old Indian industries” being broken up during colonial rule.

(b) Explain one way in which, as the author asserts, “India became an agricultural colony of industrial England.”

(c) Identify and explain one example of Indian resistance to British imperialism in India.
