AP score calculator FAQs
How many points do you need for a 5 on an AP exam?
It depends on the exam and the year. College Board converts each exam's weighted composite score to a 1–5 score using cutoffs it sets after every administration, and it doesn't publish one fixed number. On Fiveable's estimates for the exams in the table above, a 5 takes between 63% and 80% of the composite points. Each subject calculator lists its own estimated cutoffs for a 3, 4 and 5.
How does an AP score calculator work?
You enter the points you expect on each part of the exam. The calculator weights each part by its share of the exam, adds them into a composite score, and compares that composite with Fiveable's estimated cutoffs to predict a score from 1 to 5.
How accurate are AP score calculators?
They're estimates, not official College Board results. College Board doesn't publish exact cutoffs for every subject and year, so Fiveable estimates them from released exams and historical scoring information. Treat a prediction as a planning benchmark: if you're within a few points of a cutoff, either score is possible.
When do 2027 AP scores come out?
College Board releases AP scores in July and posts the exact date on its AP Students site ahead of time.
Is a 3 on an AP exam good enough for college credit?
Often, but it depends on the college and the subject. Many colleges give credit or placement for a 3, while others ask for a 4 or 5. College Board's AP Credit Policy Search shows each college's policy.
Does Fiveable have a score calculator for every AP subject?
Fiveable has score calculators for 41 AP subjects, including AP Research and the three AP Art and Design portfolios, which are scored on work submitted during the year. AP Calculus AB and BC share one calculator.
How should I use a score calculator while studying?
After each full practice test, enter your section scores and look at how far you are from the next cutoff. Knowing you're a few composite points from a 4 shows which section is worth extra practice, and checking every few weeks shows whether your practice is moving your predicted score.
