Definition

These are three genes in the lactose operon of E. coli that code for proteins involved in lactose metabolism. LacZ codes for beta-galactosidase which breaks down lactose into glucose and galactose; LacY codes for permease which allows lactose to enter the cell; and LacA codes for transacetylase, a less understood enzyme thought to detoxify certain compounds.
