Parts of a city or town designated primarily for living purposes such as houses or apartments.
Analogy
Consider residential areas like bedrooms in your house - just as bedrooms are designed specifically for rest and relaxation away from other activities like cooking or entertaining guests; similarly residential areas are designed specifically for living away from commercial or industrial activities.
