Natural disasters refer to catastrophic events with atmospheric, geological, and hydrological origins (e.g., earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, storms & floods) that can cause significant physical damage or loss of life.
Imagine nature as a giant game board where dice rolls determine weather conditions. Sometimes you roll normal weather patterns; other times you roll extreme events - these are your natural disasters. They're unpredictable but have massive impacts on everything in their path.
Tectonic Hazards: These are hazards caused by plate tectonics (the movement & interaction of Earth's plates), including earthquakes & volcanic eruptions.
Hydro-Meteorological Hazards: These include hazards caused by atmospheric processes like cyclones/hurricanes/typhoons/tornadoes/floods/droughts etc.
Climate Change: This refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns, mainly caused by human activities. It can increase the frequency and intensity of some natural disasters.
