Use the topic guides, key terms, and practice resources below to work through each topic and strengthen your reading, listening, and writing skills.
Unit 4 is the point in AP Japanese where academic vocabulary becomes essential. Topics move from concrete innovations and personal devices to broader questions about how science reshapes society, requiring you to handle more complex kanji compounds, formal register, and multi-source reasoning.
Unit 4 covers four topics: emerging technologies and Japanese innovation (4.1), personal technology and communication tools like LINE and SNS (4.2), science embedded in everyday Japanese life such as コンビニ technology and medical systems (4.3), and the positive and negative societal impacts of technological change (4.4).
Japan's identity as a 技術立国 (nation built on technology) gives you rich, specific content to work with. Examples like the Shinkansen, JAXA's Hayabusa mission, humanoid robots, and Akira Yoshino's Nobel Prize-winning lithium-ion battery research appear across authentic texts and are directly relevant to AP tasks.
This unit requires you to read and produce academic vocabulary including kanji compounds like 人工知能, 再生可能エネルギー技術, and 科学技術. You also need to connect information across sources, such as pairing a graph about SNS usage with an audio clip about digital communication norms.
AP Japanese tasks ask you to go beyond description. For Unit 4, that means explaining why Japan prioritizes certain technologies, how ものづくり culture shapes manufacturing values, and what trade-offs come with innovations like AI, surveillance systems, or social media in a Japanese cultural context.
How does science and technology both improve and complicate life in Japanese-speaking communities? Every topic in this unit returns to that tension: innovation creates opportunity and efficiency, but also raises questions about privacy (プライバシー), inequality, environmental impact, and shifts in human relationships. Being able to discuss both sides in Japanese is the core skill this unit builds.
Explore Japan's role as a global technology leader through examples like lithium-ion batteries, JAXA's Hayabusa mission, humanoid robots, and the Shinkansen. Learn the vocabulary and cultural context behind Japanese innovation.
Examine how LINE, SNS, and smartphones have transformed communication norms in Japan, including cultural phenomena like 既読 anxiety and インスタ映え, and how digital tools shape language and relationships.
Identify how science and technology are woven into ordinary Japanese routines, from コンビニ checkout systems and electronic medical records to the Shinkansen and energy-efficient home appliances.
Evaluate the benefits and challenges of technological change in Japan, including AI adoption, privacy concerns, the digital divide, and Japan's Society 5.0 policy vision for human-centered innovation.
Japan's reputation as a global technology leader is built on specific industries and research achievements. For AP tasks, you need to know concrete examples and be able to explain what drives innovation and what effects it produces. Key sectors include automotive technology, robotics, space exploration, and energy storage.

| Transportation | Shinkansen, IC card systems | Reliable, fast intercity and urban travel |
| Shopping | オンラインショッピング, QR payment | Reduced need for cash, home delivery options |
This topic asks you to evaluate technology critically. Japan's technological advances bring clear benefits in efficiency, health, and connectivity, but also raise concerns about privacy, digital inequality, environmental impact, and changes in human relationships. AP tasks in this area often require you to present multiple perspectives and support a position in Japanese.
Can you write a paragraph in Japanese that presents both a benefit and a challenge of a specific technology in Japanese society, using evidence from a source?
| Technology | Benefit | Challenge |
|---|---|---|
| AI (人工知能) | Improves medical diagnosis and manufacturing efficiency | Risk of job displacement and algorithmic bias |

| 携帯電話（けいたいでんわ） | Mobile phone; central to daily communication in Japan and integrated with payment, transit, and social networking services. |
Unit 4 topics often appear in formal academic or journalistic texts. When writing about 科学技術 or 社会的影響, use formal Japanese including です/ます forms and appropriate connective expressions like したがって or 一方で, not casual speech patterns.
Saying Japan has good technology is not enough for AP tasks. You need to explain why, connecting innovations to cultural values like ものづくり, demographic pressures like an aging population, or national policy goals like Society 5.0.
科学 (kagaku) refers to science as a field of knowledge, while 技術 (gijutsu) refers to technology or technique. The compound 科学技術 covers both. Using them interchangeably in writing can signal imprecision in academic Japanese.
Topic 4.4 tasks frequently require balanced analysis. Listing only benefits of AI or only risks of SNS without acknowledging the other side weakens your response. Practice using contrast structures like ～一方で and ～にもかかわらず.
Learning objective 4.1 specifically asks you to connect information within or across sources. A common mistake is summarizing each source separately instead of explicitly linking them, for example noting that a graph's data supports or contradicts a speaker's claim.
AP Japanese reading and listening tasks in this unit area often use formal or journalistic texts about technology topics. You need to determine the meaning of kanji compounds like 人工知能 or 再生可能エネルギー技術 from context, identify the main argument of a source, and recognize how specific details support a broader claim about science and society in Japan.
A core skill tested in AP Japanese is synthesizing information from multiple sources, such as a written article paired with an audio segment or a graph. For Unit 4 topics, this might involve linking data about SNS usage rates to a speaker's discussion of communication norms, or connecting a news report on AI adoption to a chart showing employment trends. Practice explicitly stating the connection rather than summarizing each source separately.
Written and spoken tasks on science and technology topics frequently ask you to present multiple perspectives, such as the benefits and risks of a specific technology in Japan. Strong responses use formal connective expressions, cite source evidence, and demonstrate cultural understanding, for example explaining why Society 5.0 reflects Japan's specific demographic and economic context rather than just describing what AI does.
Use this list to confirm you have covered the key content and skills before your exam.
You can name and describe at least five concrete examples of Japanese technology, including their fields and the social or economic factors that drove their development.
