Review AP Japanese Language and Culture Unit 1 to build your understanding of how families and communities function in Japanese society. This unit develops all three communication modes through themes of neighborhood life, family roles, social relationships, and urban versus rural living.
Use the topic guides, key terms, and practice questions available on Fiveable to work through each topic in order.
Unit 1 is the foundation of AP Japanese Language and Culture. It introduces the thematic and cultural content you will return to throughout the course while building core language skills across all three communication modes.
Unit 1 covers how Japanese families and communities are organized, how language reflects social relationships, and how life differs between urban and rural Japan. You will practice reading, listening, speaking, and writing about these themes using authentic cultural examples.
Topic 1.1 introduces çºå äŒ (chonaikai), the neighborhood associations that organize local events, garbage collection, festivals, and mutual support. Understanding how these groups function helps you interpret authentic texts about community participation and write or speak about local activities.
Topics 1.2 and 1.3 cover Japanese family vocabulary, the distinction between in-group (å , uchi) and out-group (å€, soto), keigo (æ¬èª) as a system of speech levels, and social customs like aisatsu, senpai-kohai hierarchies, and gift-giving practices such as ãäžå and ãæ³æ®.
Topic 1.4 examines how daily life, family structures, and social issues differ between cities like Tokyo and rural areas. Key issues include kodokushi (å€ç¬æ»), genkai shuraku (éçéèœ), and regional revitalization programs like chiiki okoshi kyoryokutai.
A central insight of Unit 1 is that Japanese language choices are never neutral. Whether you use keigo, humble vocabulary when referring to your own family to outsiders, or the appropriate greeting for a neighbor versus a stranger, your language signals your understanding of social relationships. This connection between language and culture runs through every topic in the unit and is central to AP exam tasks.
Explore how Japanese neighborhoods are organized through çºå äŒ and how community events build intergenerational bonds. Practice identifying main ideas and supporting details in texts about local activities.
Learn the vocabulary for family members in Japanese, including the distinction between humble in-group terms and respectful out-group terms. Understand oyakoko, myoji, and how family milestones like Shichi-Go-San reflect cultural values.
Study the uchi-soto framework, the three levels of keigo, the senpai-kohai hierarchy, and social customs like aisatsu and seasonal gift-giving. These concepts explain how Japanese speakers adjust language and behavior across social contexts.
Compare daily life, family structures, and social challenges in urban and rural Japan. Key concepts include genkai shuraku, kodokushi, and the chiiki okoshi kyoryokutai revitalization program.
Japanese communities are organized through local self-governing groups called çºå äŒ (chonaikai). These associations coordinate everyday community life and serve as a primary way residents build relationships across generations. Understanding their functions helps you interpret texts about community events and write or speak about participation in local activities.
Can you describe what a çºå äŒ does and explain why community participation matters in Japanese society?
| Community function | Japanese example | Cultural significance |
|---|---|---|
| Local communication | Bulletin boards and newsletters | Keeps residents informed without relying on digital media |
| Mutual support | Checking on elderly neighbors | Reduces isolation; connects to kodokushi concerns |
| Seasonal events | Summer festivals (å€ç¥ã) | Reinforces intergenerational bonds |
| Disaster preparedness | Evacuation drills | Reflects collective responsibility over individual action |
Japanese uses different vocabulary depending on whether you are referring to your own family or someone else's. This distinction is not just politeness; it reflects the uchi-soto framework that structures all Japanese social relationships. Understanding family vocabulary and the concept of oyakoko (filial piety) is essential for both cultural understanding and accurate language production.
Can you correctly use humble and respectful family vocabulary in a sentence introducing your own family versus asking about someone else's family?
| Referring to your own family | Referring to someone else's family |
|---|---|
| æ¯ (haha) | ãæ¯ãã (okasan) |
| ç¶ (chichi) | ãç¶ãã (otosan) |
| å (ani) | ãå ãã (oniisan) |
| 効 (imoto) | 効ãã (imotosan) |
Japanese social interactions are governed by clear frameworks. The uchi-soto distinction shapes language choices, behavior, and even gift-giving. Keigo (æ¬èª) is the grammatical system that encodes these relationships in speech. Social customs like aisatsu, the senpai-kohai hierarchy, and gift-giving practices such as nengajo and ochugen/oseibo all reinforce and maintain relationships over time.
Can you explain how uchi-soto affects the language you use when introducing your teacher to a stranger versus talking about your teacher with a classmate?
| Social context | Language register | Example expression |
|---|---|---|
| Talking to a close friend | Casual (ã¿ã¡å£) | ããããšã |
| Talking to a teacher or senior | Polite (äžå¯§èª) | ããããšãããããŸã |
| Referring to your own action to a superior | Humble (è¬è²èª) | åããŸã (mairimasu) |
| Referring to a superior's action | Respectful (å°æ¬èª) | ããã£ããããŸã (irasshaimasu) |
Life in Tokyo or Osaka looks very different from life in a mountain village or fishing town. These differences involve not just geography but values, family structures, and serious social challenges. Understanding the contrast between urban and rural Japan helps you interpret texts about contemporary Japanese society and discuss issues like population decline and community revitalization.
Can you compare at least two differences between urban and rural community life in Japan and explain one social challenge specific to each setting?
| Feature | Urban (e.g., Tokyo) | Rural (e.g., mountain village) |
|---|---|---|
| Family structure | Nuclear families more common | Multigenerational households more common |
| Community ties | Weaker; more anonymity | Stronger; residents know each other |
| Social challenge | Kodokushi (å€ç¬æ») | Genkai shuraku (éçéèœ) |
| Population trend | Growth and migration in | Depopulation and aging |
| Revitalization effort | Urban renewal projects | Chiiki okoshi kyoryokutai program |
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| å ãšå€ (uchi to soto) | The distinction between your in-group (uchi) and outsiders (soto); shapes language choices, behavior, and social expectations across all Japanese relationships. |
| æ¬èª (keigo) | The system of polite speech in Japanese, including äžå¯§èª (polite), å°æ¬èª (respectful), and è¬è²èª (humble); used to express social relationships through language. |
| æšæ¶ (aisatsu) | Greetings and set expressions used at meetings, departures, meals, and social transitions; appropriate aisatsu signals social competence and respect. |
| Genkai shuraku (éçéèœ) | A rural settlement with such a high aging rate that normal community functions like festivals, local shops, and road maintenance become difficult to sustain. |
| Kodokushi (å€ç¬æ») | The problem of people, especially elderly adults living alone, dying without anyone noticing for a significant period; more common in urban settings with weaker community ties. |
| Chiiki okoshi kyoryokutai (å°åãããååé) | A government program that relocates urban residents to rural areas to support local revitalization and address depopulation. |
| åž°å±æè (kizoku ishiki) | The sense of belonging to a group such as family, class, or company; shapes individual behavior and reflects the collective orientation of Japanese society. |
| è¿·æãããã (meiwaku wo kakeru) | To cause inconvenience or trouble to others; avoiding this is a strong social norm in Japan that governs public behavior and reinforces group harmony. |
A very common error is saying ãæ¯ãã when referring to your own mother in conversation with someone outside your family. Use humble forms (æ¯, haha) for your own family and respectful forms (ãæ¯ãã, okasan) for others'.
Keigo is not just about being polite; it encodes the social relationship between speaker, listener, and subject. Using casual speech with a teacher or employer signals a misunderstanding of the social context, not just a grammar error.
Uchi-soto is not the same as formal versus informal. You can be in an informal setting with an uchi group member and still use different language than you would with a soto person in the same room. The distinction is about group membership, not just setting.
The urban-rural contrast in Japan involves values, family structures, and social problems, not just location. Texts about rural decline will reference aging populations and genkai shuraku; texts about urban life may address kodokushi and anonymity.
When reading or listening to texts about Japanese community or family life, students sometimes miss implied meaning because they apply non-Japanese cultural assumptions. For example, a text about an elderly person living alone in a city carries specific social weight in the context of kodokushi that requires cultural knowledge to interpret fully.
AP Japanese exam tasks require you to identify main ideas, themes, and supporting details in authentic texts such as articles, emails, announcements, and audio recordings. Unit 1 themes like community events, family roles, and urban-rural contrasts appear frequently in these texts. Practice distinguishing the main purpose of a text from incidental details, and pay attention to cultural context clues that affect meaning.
Interpersonal tasks on the AP exam simulate real exchanges such as responding to an email or answering recorded questions in the Project Q&A. Unit 1 prepares you to use appropriate keigo, uchi-soto language choices, and social expressions like aisatsu in these contexts. A common skill tested is adjusting your register based on who you are addressing, which requires understanding the senpai-kohai and uchi-soto frameworks.
Presentational tasks ask you to express ideas, preferences, and opinions on cultural topics in organized Japanese. Unit 1 topics such as the role of family in shaping values, the challenges of rural depopulation, or the function of neighborhood associations are the kinds of themes that require you to use a variety of vocabulary and grammatical structures, self-monitor for accuracy, and produce speech or writing comprehensible to a range of Japanese speakers.
Can you describe what a neighborhood association does and give at least two examples of community activities it organizes?
Can you correctly use in-group terms (æ¯, ç¶) when referring to your own family and respectful terms (ãæ¯ãã, ãç¶ãã) when referring to someone else's?
Can you explain how uchi-soto shapes language choices and give one example each of äžå¯§èª, å°æ¬èª, and è¬è²èª?
Can you explain the purpose of nengajo, ochugen/oseibo, and aisatsu as tools for maintaining social relationships in Japan?
Can you compare family structures, community ties, and at least one social challenge specific to urban and rural settings in Japan?
Have you practiced Interpretive (reading/listening), Interpersonal (Project Q&A and email response), and Presentational (story narration and Project Presentation) tasks using Unit 1 themes?
Read the Topic 1.1 guide on community activities. Make a list of at least five things a çºå äŒ does and practice describing them in Japanese using full sentences. Focus on identifying main ideas and supporting details in short texts about community events.
Study the humble and respectful family vocabulary pairs using the key terms list. Write two short paragraphs: one introducing your own family (using humble forms) and one asking about a friend's family (using respectful forms). Review oyakoko and Shichi-Go-San as cultural context.
Review the uchi-soto concept and the three keigo levels using the Topic 1.3 guide. Practice converting casual sentences into polite and then respectful or humble forms. Study the social customs of aisatsu, senpai-kohai, nengajo, and seasonal gift-giving as relationship-maintenance tools.
Use the Topic 1.4 guide to build your comparison of urban and rural Japan. Create a comparison table covering family structure, community ties, social challenges, and revitalization efforts. Practice writing a short presentational paragraph arguing whether urban or rural life better supports community bonds.
