ANCOVA lets you test whether group differences on a dependent variable persist after statistically adjusting for one or more covariates. Main Effects

For instance, a medication might improve outcomes at a high dosage but have no effect at a low dosage.
To interpret an interaction:
- Check the F-statistic and p-value for the interaction term. If significant, the effect of one factor is not constant across levels of the other.
- Examine the pattern of adjusted means across all combinations of the independent variables. An interaction plot (adjusted means on the y-axis, one factor on the x-axis, separate lines for the other factor) makes this pattern much easier to see. Non-parallel lines signal an interaction.
- Use post-hoc pairwise comparisons to pinpoint which specific group differences are driving the interaction. Apply a correction for multiple comparisons (e.g., Bonferroni) to control the familywise error rate.
Post-hoc tests are also useful for probing significant main effects when the independent variable has more than two levels, since the omnibus F-test only tells you something differs, not what differs.
