Cognitive psychology studies how the mind processes information, with a focus on attention, memory, perception, language, and problem-solving. These three branches of psychology all aim to understand human behavior, but they approach it from different angles.

Cognitive Psychology zeroes in on internal mental processes. It treats the mind as an information-processing system and asks questions like: How do you select what to pay attention to?   • Cognitive models of psychopathology explain mental disorders through the lens of information processing. For example, depression can involve biased attention toward negative information and distorted memory retrieval.
  • Memory disorders like Alzheimer's disease and amnesia have been studied extensively using cognitive frameworks, providing insight into how different memory systems break down.

Everyday applications. Cognitive research also shapes practical domains:

  • Decision-making in legal settings (e.g., how jurors weigh evidence) and economic contexts (e.g., how cognitive biases affect financial choices)
  • Cognitive ergonomics, which applies cognitive principles to design user-friendly interfaces and environments
