Latitude

Definition

Latitude is a geographic coordinate that specifies an area's position relative to Earth's equator. It measures angular distance north or south from this reference point and affects factors such as climate zones, daylight duration, and temperature patterns.

Analogy

Imagine latitude lines as horizontal belts around Earth's waistline. Just like wearing different belts can change your outfit style depending on how high or low they sit on your waist, latitude affects regional climate patterns based on how close you are to the equator.

Tropics: The tropics refer to areas near Earth's equator between 23.5 degrees north (Tropic of Cancer) and 23.5 degrees south (Tropic of Capricorn). These regions experience warm temperatures, high solar radiation, and distinct wet and dry seasons.

Polar Regions: The polar regions are located near the North Pole and South Pole, beyond the Arctic and Antarctic Circles. They experience extreme cold temperatures, low solar radiation during certain seasons, and have unique ecosystems adapted to these conditions.

Equator: The equator is an imaginary line that divides Earth into two equal halves: the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. It receives the most direct sunlight throughout the year, resulting in relatively stable temperatures and consistent day length.
