Start with the first 3 sections of the Unit 7 one-page cheatsheet below. The full sheet is a PDF you can print.

Concert of Europe Breakdown & Unification Context

Concert of Europe (post-1815): System designed to maintain stability after Napoleonic Wars.

Why it broke down:

  • Crimean War (1853–56) exposed Ottoman weakness
  • Revealed Great Powers could not enforce collective decisions
  • Created power vacuum for nationalist movements

Result: Italy and Germany could pursue unification without Concert intervention.

Darwin, Social Darwinism & Scientific Materialism

Charles Darwin: Provided scientific, material account of biological change and human development.

Social Darwinism: Misapplication of evolution to justify racial hierarchies and imperial conquest.

  • "Survival of the fittest" applied to nations and races
  • Justified European racial superiority and colonialism

Positivism: Philosophy that science alone provides true knowledge; emphasized rational, scientific analysis of nature and human affairs.

Shift after 1848: Europe moved toward realist and materialist worldview.

Imperialism's Diplomatic & Cultural Effects

Diplomatic tensions in Europe:

  • Berlin Conference (1884–85): divided Africa; scramble for colonies
  • Fashoda Crisis (1898): France & Britain nearly clashed in Sudan
  • Moroccan Crises (1905, 1911): Germany challenged French expansion

Cultural impact in Europe: Imperial encounters influenced art and literature; provoked debate over colonialism.

Debate participants: Pan-German League (pro-expansion), Hobson & Lenin (anti-imperialism), Congo Reform Association.

Artistic & Literary Movements: Romanticism (emotion, nature, national history) → Realism (ordinary people, social problems) → Modernism (subjective, abstract, expressive).
