A functional region is an area organized around a focal point and is defined by a particular set of interactions or connections between that central place and the places in its surrounding area.
Think of a functional region like your school district. The school is the focal point, with students from surrounding neighborhoods traveling to it daily for education. The boundaries are determined by which houses send their kids to this school versus another one.
