Balkanization
Definition
The process through which a state breaks down due to conflicts among its ethnicities—as most notably experienced by Eastern Europe during early 20th century.
Analogy
Picture having several different types of candy mixed together in one bag. Over time if they start separating into their own individual wrappers because they don't get along well together (maybe sour candies don't like sweet ones), this is similar to balkanization.
