AP Human Geography Unit 3 Cheatsheet: Cultural Patterns and Processes

AP Human Geography Unit 3 Cheatsheet: Cultural Patterns and Processes

Start with the first 3 sections of the Unit 3 one-page cheatsheet below. The full sheet is a PDF you can print.

Culture: Definition & Core Attitudes

Culture = shared practices, technologies, attitudes, and behaviors transmitted by a society.

Cultural traits: food preferences, architecture, land use, clothing, religion, language.

Two contrasting attitudes toward cultural difference:

  • Cultural relativism: evaluate practices within their own context; avoid judgment
  • Ethnocentrism: judge other cultures by your own culture's standards; assumes your culture is superior

Test tip: Questions often ask you to identify which attitude a statement reflects. Relativism = understanding context; ethnocentrism = applying your own values as the measure.

Cultural Landscapes: Reading the Land

Cultural landscape = physical features + agricultural/industrial practices + religious & linguistic characteristics + evidence of sequent occupancy + traditional & postmodern architecture + land-use patterns.

What shapes landscape use:

  • Attitudes toward ethnicity and gender
  • Role of women in workforce
  • Ethnic neighborhoods and segregation
  • Indigenous communities and land claims

Key idea: Cultural landscapes are shaped by people—they combine built features with modified or meaning-laden natural ones, and they reflect cultural beliefs, identities, and power relationships. Look for sequent occupancy (layers of different cultural groups over time) in any landscape analysis.

Centripetal vs. Centrifugal Forces

Centripetal forces = pull people together; strengthen unity and identity.

  • Shared language, religion, ethnicity
  • Common history or national pride
  • Unified government or economy

Centrifugal forces = push people apart; create division and fragmentation.

  • Language, ethnicity, or religious differences
  • Regional inequality or resentment
  • Competing identities or political movements

Application: Language, ethnicity, and religion can be either centripetal (if shared) or centrifugal (if diverse/competing). Context matters.
