AP English Language Unit 3 Cheatsheet: Evidence and Line of Reasoning

AP English Language Unit 3 Cheatsheet: Evidence and Line of Reasoning

Start with the first 3 sections of the Unit 3 one-page cheatsheet below. The full sheet is a PDF you can print.

Evidence + Commentary = Logical Connection

Core principle: Evidence alone is insufficient. Commentary must establish why the evidence matters to your claim.

  • Evidence: The specific fact, quote, example, or data you cite
  • Commentary: Your explanation of how that evidence supports your claim
  • The link: Commentary reveals the logical relationship between evidence and argument

Test yourself: If you removed the commentary, would a reader understand why you included that evidence? If no, you need stronger commentary.

Methods of Development: Organizing Your Reasoning

A method of development is how you organize and develop your argument. It helps readers trace your reasoning.

Common methods:

  • Narration: Recount a sequence of events, real or imagined; reflect on its significance.
  • Cause-effect: Show how one thing causes another; trace consequences
  • Comparison-contrast: Show similarities and differences
  • Definition: Explain what something means
  • Description: Paint a detailed picture

Key insight: The method you choose shapes how readers understand your line of reasoning. Sequence matters—the order of paragraphs reveals your argument's logic.

Commentary: The Bridge Between Evidence and Claim

Commentary is the explanation that connects evidence to your claim. It shows significance and relevance.

What commentary does:

  • Explains why the evidence matters
  • Shows how it supports your specific claim
  • Connects it to your larger argument
  • Prevents readers from misinterpreting the evidence

Weak: "Smith says X. This is important."

Strong: "Smith's research shows X, which demonstrates that [your claim] because [logical explanation]."

Test tip: If you can't explain in your own words why evidence supports your claim, your commentary is too thin.
