Definition

Enacted in 2002 in response to the 2000 presidential election controversy and Supreme Court ruling in Bush v. Gore, this federal law provided funding and set minimum standards to reform administration of state-run elections. It authorized grants to replace outdated equipment, required provisional ballots, encouraged statewide computerized voter-registration systems, and mandated improved accessibility for disabled voters, increasing federal involvement in election administration.
