Convenience Sampling

Definition

Convenience sampling is a non-probability sampling method where individuals are selected based on their easy accessibility or availability. This method often leads to biased results because the sample may not accurately represent the entire population.

Analogy

Imagine you're conducting a survey about favorite ice cream flavors, but you only ask your friends who happen to be at your house at that moment. Your sample would be biased towards the preferences of your immediate circle and might not reflect the preferences of the larger population.

Related terms

Random Sampling: Random sampling is a probability sampling method where each member of the population has an equal chance of being selected for the sample.

Stratified Sampling: Stratified sampling involves dividing the population into subgroups (strata) and then randomly selecting samples from each subgroup.

Cluster Sampling: Cluster sampling involves dividing the population into clusters (e.g., schools, neighborhoods) and randomly selecting some clusters to include in the sample.
