AP Macroeconomics Unit 2 Cheatsheet: Economic Indicators and the Business Cycle

Start with the first 3 sections of the Unit 2 one-page cheatsheet below. The full sheet is a PDF you can print.

GDP: Definition & Measurement Approaches

GDP = total market value of final goods and services produced in an economy in a given period.

  • Final output only — excludes intermediate goods (avoid double-counting)
  • Circular flow — income earned = expenditures made = output produced

Three measurement approaches:

  1. Expenditures: GDP = C + I + G + (X − M)
  2. Income: sum all factor payments (wages, rent, interest, profit)
  3. Value-added: sum value added at each production stage

All three yield the same GDP figure.

GDP Limitations & Real vs. Nominal

Key limitations of GDP:

  • Excludes nonmarket transactions (household work, volunteer labor)
  • Ignores quality of life, leisure, environmental damage
  • Does not measure income distribution

Nominal vs. Real GDP:

Nominal GDPReal GDP
Current pricesConstant (base-year) prices
Measures spendingMeasures production
Inflated by price changesRemoves price-level effects

GDP deflator = (Nominal GDP / Real GDP) × 100
Converts nominal to real GDP.

Labor Force & Unemployment Calculations

Key definitions:

  • Labor force = employed + unemployed (actively seeking work)
  • Not in labor force = students, retirees, discouraged workers

Unemployment rate = (Unemployed / Labor Force) × 100

Labor force participation rate = (Labor Force / Adult Population) × 100

Common error: Discouraged workers are excluded from the labor force entirely (so they aren't counted as unemployed), while part-time workers are counted as fully employed even when their part-time status is involuntary — so the official unemployment rate understates labor underutilization.
