Definition

A Supreme Court decision in 1896 that interpreted the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to permit state laws requiring racial segregation in public facilities so long as the separated facilities were purportedly "equal." By upholding state-sanctioned segregation—most famously involving separate railcar accommodations—this ruling legitimized Jim Crow policies and shaped federal–state relations on civil rights until it was repudiated in the mid-20th century.
