Materials, Processes, Ideas: Identify & Write
Three core components to identify in writing:
- Materials: Physical substances used (e.g., burned twig, found paper, charcoal)
- Processes: Physical and conceptual activities (e.g., foraging, burning, observational drawing)
- Ideas: Concepts guiding the work
How to write effectively:
- Observe carefully and methodically before writing
- Identify why and how components are used, not just what they are
- Use clear, concise language with essential information only
- Avoid stating the visually obvious; focus on less visible, more important aspects
- Make strong connections between visual evidence and written words
- Example: Instead of "charcoal on paper," write "burned twig on found paper" to reveal material choice and sourcing process
Develop your writing: Study how published artists describe their own work; exchange feedback with peers on clarity.
