Absorption refrigeration uses heat to power cooling, unlike traditional systems that use electricity. It's a clever way to create cold using warmth, making it great for places with extra heat lying around.

The system has some key parts: an absorber, generator, condenser, and evaporator. These work together with special fluid pairs to move heat and create cooling, all without a noisy compressor.

Components of Absorption Refrigeration

Main Components

  • Absorber acts as a low-pressure vessel that absorbs the refrigerant vapor from the evaporator using a liquid absorbent solution
  • Generator heats the refrigerant-absorbent solution to vaporize the refrigerant, which is then sent to the condenser
  • Condenser cools and condenses the high-pressure refrigerant vapor into a liquid state, rejecting heat to the surroundings
  • Evaporator allows the low-pressure liquid refrigerant to absorb heat from the space being cooled, causing it to evaporate into a vapor state

Additional Components

  • Expansion valve reduces the pressure of the liquid refrigerant coming from the condenser before it enters the evaporator
  • Solution pump circulates the refrigerant-absorbent solution between the absorber and the generator
  • Heat exchanger improves system efficiency by preheating the refrigerant-absorbent solution entering the generator using the hot solution leaving the generator

Working Fluid Pairs

Characteristics of Working Fluid Pairs

  • Working fluid pair consists of a refrigerant and an absorbent that have a strong affinity for each other
  • Refrigerant should have a high enthalpy of vaporization to maximize cooling capacity (ammonia, water)
  • Absorbent should have a strong ability to absorb the refrigerant vapor and be easily separated from the refrigerant when heated (water, lithium bromide)
Main Components, 4.3 Refrigerators and Heat Pumps – General Physics Using Calculus I

Common Working Fluid Pairs

  • Lithium bromide-water system uses water as the refrigerant and lithium bromide as the absorbent
    • Operates under vacuum conditions due to the low vapor pressure of water
    • Suitable for air-conditioning applications with chilled water temperatures above 0°C (32°F)
  • Ammonia-water system uses ammonia as the refrigerant and water as the absorbent
    • Operates at higher pressures compared to the lithium bromide-water system
    • Suitable for refrigeration applications with evaporator temperatures below 0°C (32°F)

Performance Metrics

Coefficient of Performance (COP)

  • Coefficient of Performance (COP) is the ratio of the cooling capacity provided by the system to the heat input required at the generator
  • COP is a measure of the efficiency of the absorption refrigeration system
  • Typical COP values for absorption refrigeration systems range from 0.6 to 1.2, depending on the working fluid pair and operating conditions

Heat-Driven Cycle Characteristics

  • Absorption refrigeration is a heat-driven cycle that uses thermal energy (heat) as the primary input instead of mechanical work (compressors)
  • Heat sources for absorption refrigeration can include waste heat, solar thermal energy, or natural gas combustion
  • Absorption refrigeration systems are advantageous in situations where waste heat or low-cost thermal energy is readily available (combined heat and power plants, industrial processes)
  • Heat-driven nature of the cycle makes absorption refrigeration systems more environmentally friendly compared to conventional vapor-compression systems that rely on electricity
