Military dictatorships dominated Latin America from the 1960s to 1980s. Fueled by Cold War tensions and U.S. support, these regimes seized power amid political instability and economic challenges, promising order and development while suppressing leftist movements. These authoritarian governments were characterized by human rights abuses, censorship, and economic policies favoring elites. Despite brutal repression, resistance movements emerged. Eventually, economic crises and international pressure led to the fall of dictatorships and transitions to democracy.
