Definition

Modern individualism is a social theory favoring freedom of action for individuals over collective or state control but recognizes some need for governmental involvement in societal affairs.

Analogy

Consider modern individualism like playing a video game with cheat codes provided by the game developer (government). You still get to play freely but there's assistance available when needed.
