Fourteen Points

Definition

A statement given by President Woodrow Wilson declaring that World War I was being fought for a moral cause and proposing specific principles for peace in Europe.

Analogy

Imagine you're playing a board game without any rules - it would be chaotic! The Fourteen Points are like those game rules but for international relations - they were designed to promote peace and prevent another world war from happening.

Related terms

Self-determination: The process by which a country determines its own statehood and forms its own allegiances and government.

Armistice Day: The day Germany signed an armistice agreement with the Allies, marking the end of World War I. It was based on Wilson's Fourteen Points.

Reparations: These are payments made by a losing country in a war to the winners to compensate for damages caused during the war. This concept was part of the Treaty of Versailles but contradicted Wilson's Fourteen Points.
