SOx

Definition

SOx refers to sulfur oxides, which are air pollutants produced by burning fossil fuels that contain sulfur. These pollutants contribute to the formation of acid rain and can cause respiratory problems in humans.

Analogy

Imagine you're at a bonfire and someone throws a handful of stinky rotten eggs into the fire. The resulting smell is unpleasant and can make it hard for you to breathe properly. In the same way, when fossil fuels containing sulfur are burned, they release SOx into the air, causing pollution and respiratory issues.

Related terms

Acid Rain: Acid rain is formed when sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) combine with atmospheric moisture. It can harm aquatic life, damage forests, and corrode buildings.

Scrubbers: Scrubbers are devices used in industrial processes to remove or reduce pollutants from exhaust gases before they are released into the atmosphere.

Sulfur Dioxide (SO2): Sulfur dioxide is a gas produced by burning fossil fuels that contain sulfur. It contributes to air pollution and can have harmful effects on human health.
