Definition

The pneumotaxic center is a region in the upper part of the pons in the brain that helps regulate the rhythm of breathing by inhibiting inspiration, thus controlling the respiratory rate and pattern. It sends signals to stop the lungs from inhaling too much air, thereby preventing overexpansion.
