Hyoid bone: A horseshoe-shaped bone situated in the anterior midline of the neck between the chin and thyroid cartilage; serves as a point of attachment for the hyoglossus and other muscles.
Genioglossus: The muscle that originates from the mandible and inserts into the bottom of the tongue, primarily responsible for protruding (sticking out) and moving it side to side.
Styloglossus: A muscle that arises from the styloid process of the temporal bone and inserts into the side of the tongue, elevating and retracting it during swallowing
