What is costal cartilage?

Costal cartilage is the flexible hyaline cartilage at the front of the ribs that links them to the sternum, or breastbone. In Anatomy and Physiology I, you usually meet it when you study the rib cage and how the thoracic cage balances protection with movement.

Each pair of ribs has a corresponding costal cartilage. The first seven pairs attach directly to the sternum, which is why they are called true ribs.
