What is Pragmatics?

Conversational Implicature

• Grice's maxims describe the expectations that guide conversational implicature:
  • Maxim of Quantity: Provide the appropriate amount of information

  • Maxim of Manner: Be clear, concise, and orderly in your communication
• Flouting a maxim can generate implicature by deliberately violating one of the maxims (saying "It's a bit chilly" to imply that it's very cold)

• Particularized implicature depends on specific context, while generalized implicature is more context-independent

Politeness Theory

Deixis and Indexicality

• Spatial deixis indicates the location of people or objects in relation to the speaker (here, there, this, that)
• Temporal deixis refers to the time of the utterance or the events being described (now, then, yesterday, tomorrow)
