French adjectives can be tricky, but they're key to describing things accurately. They change based on the noun's gender and number, with most adding -e for feminine and -s for plural forms.

There are exceptions to these rules, like adjectives ending in -e or -x. Placement matters too - most follow the noun, but some go before. Mastering these patterns will make your French descriptions more natural and precise.

Adjective Agreement in French

Basic Rules

  • In French, adjectives typically follow the noun they modify and must agree in gender (masculine or feminine) and number (singular or plural) with the noun
  • Most adjectives have different masculine and feminine forms, with the feminine form typically adding an -e to the end of the masculine form
    • However, there are exceptions to this rule (vieux/vieille)
  • The plural form of an adjective is typically formed by adding an -s to the singular form, regardless of gender
    • However, there are exceptions to this rule as well (beau/beaux)
  • Some adjectives have irregular forms that do not follow the typical patterns of agreement
    • beau/belle (beautiful)
    • vieux/vieille (old)

Exceptions and Irregularities

  • Adjectives ending in -e in the masculine form do not change in the feminine form (jeune, rapide)
  • Adjectives ending in -x in the masculine form change to -se in the feminine form (heureux/heureuse, jaloux/jalouse)
  • Adjectives ending in -er in the masculine form change to -รจre in the feminine form (premier/premiรจre, dernier/derniรจre)
  • Adjectives ending in -f in the masculine form change to -ve in the feminine form (actif/active, sportif/sportive)
  • Some adjectives have completely irregular forms in the masculine and feminine (beau/belle, nouveau/nouvelle, vieux/vieille)

Applying Adjective Forms

Singular Agreement

  • Masculine singular nouns are paired with the masculine singular form of the adjective
    • un livre intรฉressant (an interesting book)
    • le petit garรงon (the little boy)
  • Feminine singular nouns are paired with the feminine singular form of the adjective
    • une maison spacieuse (a spacious house)
    • la grande fille (the tall girl)

Plural Agreement

  • Masculine plural nouns are paired with the masculine plural form of the adjective
    • des livres intรฉressants (interesting books)
    • les petits garรงons (the little boys)
  • Feminine plural nouns are paired with the feminine plural form of the adjective
    • des maisons spacieuses (spacious houses)
    • les grandes filles (the tall girls)

Constructing Sentences with Agreement

Adjective Placement

  • Place the adjective after the noun it modifies in a simple sentence
    • Le chat noir dort sur le canapรฉ (The black cat sleeps on the couch)
    • La robe bleue est jolie (The blue dress is pretty)
  • Ensure that the adjective agrees with the noun in both gender and number
    • Les fleurs rouges sont belles (The red flowers are beautiful)
    • Les chiens bruns courent vite (The brown dogs run fast)

Multiple Nouns and Genders

  • Use the correct form of the adjective when describing multiple nouns of different genders
    • Le garรงon et la fille sont intelligents (The boy and the girl are intelligent)
    • Mon pรจre et ma mรจre sont gentils (My father and mother are kind)
  • If the nouns are of different genders, the masculine plural form of the adjective is used
    • Le soleil et la lune sont brillants (The sun and the moon are bright)
    • Le crayon et la rรจgle sont utiles (The pencil and the ruler are useful)

Identifying Agreement Errors

Common Mistakes

  • Recognize when an adjective does not agree with the noun it modifies in gender or number
    • La voiture rouge instead of La voiture rouge (The red car)
    • Les chats noir instead of Les chats noirs (The black cats)
  • Identify irregular adjectives that do not follow the typical patterns of agreement and use their correct forms
    • un bel homme instead of un beau homme (a handsome man)
    • de vieilles chaussures instead of de vieux chaussures (old shoes)

Adjective Placement Errors

  • Correct instances where the placement of the adjective is incorrect, as some adjectives precede the noun they modify
    • une jolie robe instead of une robe jolie (a pretty dress)
    • un grand arbre instead of un arbre grand (a tall tree)
  • Note that BANGS adjectives (Beauty, Age, Number, Goodness, Size) usually precede the noun in French
    • une belle fleur (a beautiful flower)
    • trois petits chats (three little cats)

Compound Adjective Agreement

  • Identify and correct errors in agreement when using compound adjectives, where both parts of the adjective must agree with the noun
    • des cheveux courts et raides instead of des cheveux court et raide (short and straight hair)
    • une jupe longue et ample instead of une jupe longue et ample (a long and loose skirt)
  • Note that in compound adjectives, both adjectives must agree with the noun in gender and number
    • des yeux bleus et profonds (deep blue eyes)
    • des feuilles vertes et brillantes (bright green leaves)
