Short answer: they do different things. Knowt is a flashcard app, and a good one with a free plan. Fiveable is an AP exam prep platform. Many students use both: flashcards to memorize terms, Fiveable to turn what they memorized into points on the exam.

Knowt's Basic plan is free. Fiveable used to be free too, and if you found us through an older Reddit thread, that's probably the version you remember.
Fiveable started in 2018 as an AP community built around live cram streams and study guides, with no charge to use it. Over the years it grew into something bigger: thousands of practice questions with explanations, FRQ practice with AI grading, full-length practice exams, and yearly content reviews for every subject. Building and grading real exam practice costs a lot more than hosting notes, so the full platform moved to a paid subscription: $79/year (or $29/month) with all subjects included.
Two things still don't require a subscription: the AP diagnostic quiz and the full archive of past cram session recordings at fiveable.me/cram-archives. Study guides open with a short preview, so you can see the content before subscribing.
On Knowt's side, its plans page (checked September 2026) lists Basic as free, with notes, flashcards, and its study modes included, and an Ultra plan at $12.49 a month billed $149.99 a year, or $24.99 month to month, which adds unlimited AI summaries, AP mock exams, and auto-graded assessments.
What Each Tool Is For
Knowt is for memorizing. It gives you free flashcards, a one-click Quizlet set importer that Knowt's site also describes as free, and spaced practice modes. If you need to know 90 vocab terms by Friday, it does that well. Knowt has also added its own AP hub with notes, practice tests, a score calculator, and an FRQ room, but the flashcards are the product students love it for.
Fiveable is for the exams themselves. That means the unit tests you take all year, and then the AP exam at the end. You get study guides for every unit of all 42 AP subjects, written and reviewed by AP teachers and updated each year when the exams change. The practice questions are AP-style, with an explanation for every answer choice, and they include the stimulus-based questions (graphs, documents, data tables) that real AP exams use. On top of that you get FRQ practice with AI grading, full-length practice exams, and score calculators. The whole process happens in one place: read the guide, do the questions, get your FRQs graded, take a full exam, see where you stand.

FRQ Practice: The Biggest Difference
Free-response questions decide a huge share of your AP score, and this is where the two tools are furthest apart.
Fiveable's FRQ practice includes stimulus materials: the graphs, charts, documents, and images that appear on the real exam. For subjects like AP US History, AP Biology, and AP Statistics, analyzing stimuli is the skill being tested. Practicing without them means practicing a different exam.
Then your response gets graded. Which Should You Pick?
Choose Knowt if you want flashcards without paying, you're importing Quizlet sets, or all you need to do right now is memorize.
Choose Fiveable if you're preparing for AP exams and want the parts flashcards can't do: unit-by-unit guides, realistic practice with explanations, and full-length exams across all 42 subjects, plus FRQs that get graded in 37 of them, on one subscription.
