How AP Research is scored

• AP Research has no end-of-year exam. Your whole score comes from a through-course performance task with two components.
• The Academic Paper (4,000-5,000 words) is scored holistically from 1 to 5 by College Board and is worth 75% of your score.
• The Presentation and Oral Defense is scored out of 24 points across 7 rubric rows by your AP Research teacher, and is worth 25%.

Official portfolio structure and rubric scoring reflect current College Board materials. Fiveable estimates the 1-5 score cutoffs.

We use released exams and historical scoring information to estimate which raw-score ranges may correspond to each AP score. Treat the prediction as a planning benchmark, not a guarantee.

• There is no multiple-choice or free-response exam in AP Research, so nothing is machine scored and nothing is graded at the AP Reading in June.
• Your Academic Paper is uploaded to the AP Digital Portfolio and scored by College Board-trained readers using a holistic 5-point rubric. It counts for 75%.
• Your Presentation and Oral Defense (15-20 minutes, followed by three or four questions from a panel of three evaluators) is scored by your teacher using the 24-point rubric. It counts for 25%. Only the first 20 minutes are scored.
• The two weighted component scores are combined and converted to the 1-5 AP scale.

It's all relative (really). We tend to think your score matters far less in the long run, so there really isn't such thing as a "bad score". Taking the test and going through the process is correlated with going to and doing better in college.

Technically, a "3" is considered passing because it's the lowest score that can earn college credit. Some colleges require 4s or 5s. And some (elite) colleges don't give credit at all.
