AP English Language Unit 5 Cheatsheet: Organization and Style

Start with the first 3 sections of the Unit 5 one-page cheatsheet below. The full sheet is a PDF you can print.

Paragraph Structure: Claims, Evidence, Commentary

Every body paragraph needs three layers:

  • Claim: A statement that advances the argument
  • Evidence: Specific support (quotation, data, example)
  • Commentary: Explanation of how the evidence proves the claim and connects to the thesis

Commentary is the reasoning bridge. It shows readers why the evidence matters and how it supports the overarching thesis. Without commentary, evidence sits isolated.

Test yourself: Can you explain how each paragraph's claim and evidence work together to prove the thesis? If not, you need stronger commentary.

Coherence Across Levels

Coherence means ideas logically connect. Check it at three levels:

LevelWhat Connects
SentenceOne clause to the next within a sentence
ParagraphOne sentence to the next within a paragraph
TextOne paragraph to the next across the essay

Red flag: If a reader asks "Why are you telling me this?" or "How does this connect?" your coherence is broken. Reread and trace the logical path.

Word Choice and Perspective

Precise word choice reduces confusion and shapes perception.

Questions to ask:

  • What does this word literally mean (denotation)?
  • What feelings or associations does it carry (connotation)?
  • What perspective does it reveal about the subject?
  • Could a different word change the reader's perception?

Example: "The government invested in education" vs. "The government spent money on education." Same fact, different tone.

In your writing: Choose words that align with your argument's perspective and help your audience see things your way.
