AP English Language Unit 2 Cheatsheet: Audience and Thesis Development

Start with the first 3 sections of the Unit 2 one-page cheatsheet below. The full sheet is a PDF you can print.

Rhetorical Situation & Audience Analysis

Six components of rhetorical situation:

  • Exigence: the problem or issue prompting the argument
  • Audience: intended readers and their values, beliefs, needs, background
  • Writer: the person making the argument
  • Purpose: what the writer aims to achieve
  • Context: historical, cultural, social circumstances
  • Message: the central claim and supporting reasoning

Key principle: Writers tailor choices based on perception of audience values and needs—not necessarily objective facts about the audience.

Strategic choices include: tone, evidence selection, word choice, appeals, and level of formality.

Appeals & Persuasion

Arguments persuade through appeals—modes of persuasion:

  • Ethos: credibility and trustworthiness of the writer
  • Pathos: emotional connection to audience values and feelings
  • Logos: logical reasoning and evidence-based support

Purpose: Appeals motivate action or shift belief by relating to what the audience cares about.

In analysis: Identify which appeal(s) dominate and explain how they target the specific audience.

Building & Analyzing Arguments

Paragraph structure with claims and evidence:

  1. Make a clear claim (mini-thesis for the paragraph)
  2. Provide relevant evidence (quotation, example, statistic, reasoning)
  3. Explain how evidence supports the claim (commentary)
  4. Connect back to thesis and audience

Line of reasoning analysis:

  • Does each claim logically follow from the previous one?
  • Does the evidence actually support the claim?
  • Does the progression strengthen the thesis?

Organization creates unity: Logical sequencing, transitions, and consistent focus on the thesis help readers follow your reasoning.
