Overview

AP Japanese Interpersonal and Presentational skills are the production skills: you use the target language to speak and write for a purpose. The revised Fall 2026 CED keeps four free-response questions, but the current order and task model are different from the old speaking format.

The current free-response section is worth 50% of the AP score:

QuestionTaskModeWeight
Q1Project PresentationPresentational speaking20%
Q2Project Q&AInterpersonal speaking15%
Q3Story NarrationPresentational writing7.5%

What This Skill Requires

You need to fit your language to the audience, task, and context. That means using appropriate register, clear vocabulary, accurate enough grammar, and organization that helps the reader or listener follow your ideas.

Project Presentation asks you to explain researched cultural information clearly. Project Q&A asks you to respond to four spoken follow-up questions about the project, with 40 seconds for each answer. Story Narration asks you to write a complete story using all four pictures. Email Response asks you to answer both requests for information in a culturally appropriate email.

How to Practice

Build a bank of examples for each unit theme, especially Unit 3: Art and Creativity, because the 2026-27 course project focuses on music as a lens for cultural products, practices, and perspectives. Practice explaining how products and practices reveal cultural perspectives.

For speaking, rehearse a 3-minute project presentation and 40-second Q&A responses. For writing, practice connected picture-sequence stories and complete email responses that answer every request.

Common Mistakes

Do not prepare for the retired conversation or cultural-presentation task labels as if they are still current exam questions. The current speaking work is project-based.

Avoid empty responses, vague cultural claims, mismatched register, and writing that treats each picture or email request as disconnected. Strong responses use specific details and stay organized.
