Overview
AP Italian Interpersonal and Presentational skills are the production skills: you use the target language to speak and write for a purpose. The revised Fall 2026 CED keeps these skills central, but the May 2027 exam now assesses them through three free-response questions instead of the old four-task model.
The current free-response section is worth 50% of the AP score:
| Question | Task | Mode | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 | Project Presentation | Presentational speaking | 20% |
| Q2 | Project Q&A | Interpersonal speaking | 15% |
| Q3 | Argumentative Essay | Presentational writing | 15% |

What This Skill Requires
You need to fit your language to the audience, task, and context. That means using appropriate register, clear vocabulary, accurate enough grammar, and organization that helps the reader or listener follow your ideas.
Project Presentation asks you to explain researched cultural information clearly. Project Q&A asks you to respond to four spoken follow-up questions about the project, with 40 seconds for each answer. The Argumentative Essay asks you to use audio, written, and visual or data sources to support a position.
How to Practice
Build a bank of examples for each unit theme, especially Unit 3: Art and Creativity, because the 2026-27 course project focuses on music as a lens for cultural products, practices, and perspectives. Practice explaining examples from Italian-speaking communities and connecting them to broader cultural meaning.
For speaking, rehearse a 3-minute project presentation and 40-second Q&A responses. For writing, practice source-based argumentative essays that cite all three sources and explain how the evidence supports your claim.
Common Mistakes
Do not prepare for the retired conversation or cultural-comparison task labels as if they are still current exam questions. Comparison still matters, but it now appears inside project explanations, Q&A responses, and essay reasoning.
Avoid empty responses, vague cultural claims, and memorized scripts that do not answer the prompt. Strong responses use specific evidence and stay organized.
