How Long is Each AP Exam?

Are you wondering how long your AP exams are?

Knowing how long your AP exams might be can help you mentally prepare for the big day! Each AP exam's length varies based on the subject. AP Exam lengths vary by subject. Many timed exams are about 2 to 3 hours long, but some are shorter, some are longer, and some AP courses include portfolios or performance tasks instead of a traditional timed end-of-course exam. AP exam formats vary by subject. Many exams include multiple-choice and free-response sections, but some have different structures or additional components, and break timing varies by exam. Some AP courses combine a timed end-of-course exam with through-course assessment components. AP Computer Science Principles has two assessed components: a 2-hour end-of-course exam and the Create performance task completed during the course. Be sure to check current College Board instructions for submission details and exam-day procedures.

Time Management Strategy for AP Exams

Practicing is important for AP exams, but it’s equally vital to master time management during your study sessions before the exam day.

  • When you have some time, simulate a testing environment by taking a practice exam with a watch nearby. Make sure to check on the time to pace yourself, so that you finish each part in time.

On many AP free-response sections, you'll need to pace yourself across multiple questions or tasks. Check the format for your specific exam so you know whether time is fully self-managed within the section or guided by the proctor.

  • For example, on the AP English Language and Composition exam, you write three essays (synthesis, rhetorical analysis, and argument) in 2 hours and 15 minutes, so careful pacing is essential.

Now, let’s talk through the multiple choice section.

  • In this section, you have to answer questions in a fast-paced manner in order to get through all the questions in time.
  • Use the timing for your specific exam to set your pace. Divide the total minutes in the section by the number of questions to estimate your average time per question, and move on strategically if a question is taking too long.

Remember, practicing while pacing your time is important. Here are some FRQs you can practice at Fiveable!
