Definition

An 1794 armed uprising by western Pennsylvania frontier farmers protesting a federal excise tax on distilled spirits and perceived unequal representation. Its suppression by President Washington using federalized militia established the new national government's authority to enforce federal law over state and local resistance, strengthening executive power and clarifying federal supremacy under the Constitution.
