Reading & Listening: Main Ideas & Details

Interpretive Mode (1.A.1, 1.B.1)

  • Identify supporting details: Who, what, when, where, why in texts about families, communities, activities
  • Determine main idea: What is the passage really about? Family structure, values, modern challenges, community roles?
  • Recognize explicit meaning: What does the text directly state?
  • Interpret meaning: What does the author imply about family values or community function?
  • Synthesize & infer: Combine details to draw conclusions about how families shape beliefs or communities experience today's world

Strategy: Annotate texts. Circle family/community vocabulary. Underline topic sentences.

Communication Strategies

Comprehensibility & Repair (2.B.1, 2.B.2, 2.B.3)

  • Circumlocution: Describe a word you can't recall. C'est une personne qui… vit avec sa famille
  • Paraphrasing: Rephrase your idea in simpler terms if not understood
  • Monitor production: Catch errors (gender, verb agreement, tense) and correct mid-sentence
  • Pronunciation: Keep syllables fairly even in length but stress the final syllable of each rhythmic group; distinguish nasal vowels (on/an/in/un); link words smoothly (liaison/enchaînement)
  • Ask for clarification: Pouvez-vous répéter? Qu'est-ce que vous voulez dire?

Strategy: Practice problem words daily. Embrace mistakes as learning.
