Definition

The lateral pterygoid plate is a thin bony projection of the sphenoid bone, located in the skull, that serves as an attachment point for the lateral pterygoid muscle, which plays a key role in jaw movement. It is one of two plates, with the other being the medial pterygoid plate, and it's positioned on either side of the skull base.
