Definition

The chloride shift is a process in which bicarbonate ions (HCO3-) move out of red blood cells, and chloride ions (Cl-) move into the red blood cells to maintain electrical neutrality. This exchange facilitates the transport of carbon dioxide from tissues to the lungs for exhalation.
