Definition

The magnification equation is an equation that relates the height of an image to the height of the object. It helps determine whether an image is magnified or reduced in size.

Analogy

Imagine you have a photocopy machine and you want to enlarge or shrink a document. The magnification equation tells you how much bigger or smaller the copy will be compared to the original document.

Related terms

Virtual Image: An image formed by light rays that appear to come from a location where they do not actually converge. It cannot be projected onto a screen.

Reduced Image: An image that is smaller than the actual object.

Enlarged Image: An image that is larger than the actual object.
