Michelangelo was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect and poet of the High Renaissance born in the Republic of Florence, who exerted an unparalleled influence on the development of Western art.
Think of Michelangelo as a Swiss Army Knife. Just like this versatile tool that has different functions (knife, screwdriver, scissors), Michelangelo was multi-talented and excelled in various fields such as sculpture, painting, architecture and poetry.
High Renaissance: This term refers to a period of Italian art from about 1490 to 1527. It is characterized by great masters like Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael who created works marked by complex compositions and a high level of detail.
Sistine Chapel Ceiling: This is one of Michelangelo's most famous works. He painted it between 1508-1512 for Pope Julius II. The ceiling depicts scenes from the Old Testament including the iconic 'Creation of Adam'.
David (Michelangelo): A masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture created between 1501 and 1504 by Michelangelo. The statue represents the Biblical hero David with an intense look ready to fight against Goliath.
