Definition

The nucleus ambiguus is a collection of motor neurons located in the medulla oblongata, part of the brainstem, that plays a crucial role in controlling the muscles involved in swallowing, vocalization, and parasympathetic innervation of the heart. It is integral to the autonomic function and reflexes within the divisions of the autonomic nervous system.
