Definition

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) is a component of the immune system that provides the first line of defense against antigens entering through mucosal surfaces. It consists of collections of lymphocytes and other immune cells embedded in the mucous membranes lining the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and genitourinary tracts.
