Both tools put AI to work on AP free-response, and they were built for different work. Class Companion runs assignments end to end: build or assign from a big content library, students submit, the AI gives feedback and a score, students revise and can even dispute. Fiveable's FRQ grading does the scoring: a class set of real FRQs, scored point by point against how each AP question type earns points, with every score routed through you.

How Class Companion Works
Class Companion is an assignment platform with AI feedback built in. Teachers pull from a public library of 10,000+ assignments and 500+ rubrics or build their own, students respond by typing or by uploading photos of handwritten work, and the AI returns feedback and scoring in the moment. Students can take multiple attempts and dispute scores they disagree with, which the teacher accepts or overrules. Its subject list spans middle and high school standards including AP, with dedicated pages for subjects like AP Psychology and AP US History, where it covers DBQ, LEQ, and SAQ work. Panorama Education acquired the company in April 2025.
The pricing is the biggest practical difference: the individual teacher plan is free to sign up. LMS integration (Canvas, Schoology, Google Classroom), plagiarism and AI detection, premium insights, and district data agreements sit on the school and district tier, priced by quote.
How Fiveable's Grading Works
Fiveable's grading is a scoring workflow. Import a class set from Google Classroom, Google Drive, or AP Classroom exports, or scan handwritten work with the iOS app, and the AI scores every response point by point, showing its reasoning on each point. You review, adjust or reject, and export. We built scoring workflows for 37 AP subjects, including the science, math, and language FRQ types that assignment-first tools treat generically, and the stimulus materials that come with a prompt are part of the scoring.
The first difference we'd point to is the evidence. We benchmark the scoring against publicly released College Board samples and publish per-subject results, including exact-match and within-one-point rates. As of September 2026 we did not find published scoring-accuracy results from Class Companion; its published numbers are outcome claims (test-score gains, time saved), which are a different kind of evidence.

Where Class Companion Is the Right Call
If your course runs on frequent low-stakes assignments and you want students revising inside a feedback loop, Class Companion was built for exactly that, and the free teacher tier makes trying it a no-risk decision. Letting students dispute a score, with the teacher ruling on it, works well in a classroom. Social studies teachers with heavy writing volume get the most from its library.
Where Fiveable Is the Right Call
Fiveable is the right call when you need scoring done: a class set of DBQs due back Friday, a science FRQ whose data table has to be read, a stack of handwritten responses, or a subject outside the essay-heavy ones. And when you want to verify accuracy before trusting a tool, published per-subject benchmarks are the only way to check without running your own test. The dashboard is public; look up your subject first.
