Argument Structure & Elements
Core components of a cohesive argument:
- Introduction: Engages audience; provides background and context
- Thesis: Conveys main idea
- Reasons, evidence, commentary: Support the thesis
- Counterargument, concession, refutation, rebuttal: Acknowledge and respond to opposing views
- Conclusion: Synthesizes reasoning, considers implications, ties back to introduction
- Bibliography: Identifies works cited
Coherence: Elements and ideas flow logically. Use transitions to show relationships between ideas and move audience forward.
