AP Seminar Unit 3 Cheatsheet: Evaluate Multiple Perspectives

Start with the first 2 sections of the Big Idea 3 – Evaluate Multiple Perspectives one-page cheatsheet below. The full sheet is a PDF you can print.

What Is a Perspective?

Definition: A viewpoint shaped by an individual's background, assumptions, and worldview.

  • Background factors: experiences, culture, education, socioeconomic status
  • Assumptions: unstated beliefs taken as true
  • Worldview: overall framework for interpreting reality
  • External sources: media, institutions, peer groups, authority figures

Key point: Perspectives are shaped by who holds them—their context, values, and discipline—but they still must be evaluated for the quality of their evidence, reasoning, and credibility.

Comparing Perspectives: Key Questions

  • Source: Who holds this perspective? What is their background and stake in the issue?
  • Evidence: What facts or reasoning support this view? Are sources credible?
  • Assumptions: What must be true for this perspective to hold?
  • Scope: What does this perspective address? What does it exclude?
  • Consistency: Does the perspective contradict itself or other claims by the same source?
  • Relevance: How directly does this perspective address the core issue?

Use these to structure comparison essays and test responses.
