Argument Structure & Elements
Core components of a complete argument:
- Introduction: Engages audience; provides background, context
- Thesis: Main idea of the argument
- Reasons, evidence, commentary: Support the thesis
- Counterargument, concession, refutation, rebuttal: Acknowledge and respond to opposing views
- Conclusion: Synthesizes reasoning; considers implications; ties back to introduction
- Bibliography: Identifies works cited
Coherence: Elements and ideas flow logically. Use transitions to show relationships between ideas and move the audience smoothly from one point to the next.
