AP Research Unit 3 Cheatsheet: Evaluate Multiple Perspectives

AP Research Unit 3 Cheatsheet: Evaluate Multiple Perspectives

Start with the first 3 sections of the Unit 3 one-page cheatsheet below. The full sheet is a PDF you can print.

What Shapes a Perspective?

A perspective is not random—it comes from:

  • Background (experiences, culture, education)
  • Assumptions (unstated beliefs about how things work)
  • Worldview (overall framework for interpreting reality)
  • External sources (media, institutions, social groups)

Key insight: Two people can examine the same evidence and reach different conclusions because their perspectives filter what they notice and how they interpret it.

Types of Perspective Relationships

TypeDefinition
ConcurringPerspectives agree on the same conclusion
ComplementaryPerspectives address different aspects of the same issue; together they provide fuller understanding
CompetingPerspectives directly oppose each other on the same point
OppositionalPerspectives are in direct conflict

Test tip: Not all disagreement is opposition. Identify whether perspectives are truly contradictory or simply emphasizing different dimensions.

Ambiguity & Interpretation Limits

Some ideas or perspectives are not well-defined—they may use vague language, lack clear boundaries, or rest on contested terms.

When you encounter ambiguity:

  • Acknowledge that identification may not yield one "correct" answer
  • Explain what makes the perspective unclear
  • Show how different readers might interpret it differently
  • Avoid forcing false certainty

Example: "Freedom" means different things to different people—political freedom, economic freedom, personal autonomy. A perspective using this term may be ambiguous until you clarify which meaning is intended.
